Question

During first half distance of journey the average speed is 40 km per hour and during remaining distance of journey average speed is 70 km per hour find average speed for the entire journey?

Open in App
Solution

If you travel half the distance at speed x and half the distance at speed y, your average speed for the whole trip is 2/(1/x + 1/y), which can also be expressed as 2xy/(x+y).
So Average speed for whole trip=2xy/(x+y)
Here x=40kph
y=70kph
applying this in equation we will get
Average speed=2*40*70/(40+70)
=5600/110
=50.90kph
