Fractional distillation is the separation of a mixture into its component parts or fractions. Chemical compounds are separated by heating them to a temperature at which one or more fractions of the mixture will vaporize. During fractional distillation, crude petroleum is heated to a temperature of about 400 to 500C. which makes most of the oil evaporate. The fluid then enters the column.
