Question

During her summer internship, Nalini visits an industrial unit that uses common salt i.e. sodium chloride as a raw material in different processes to manufacture a few important chemical compounds. After the completion of the internship, she submits her summer internship report in which she drew a flowchart as shown below.

Solution

The correct option is B N2
Common salt or sodium chloride (NaCl) is used as food preservatives and also for seasoning of food in our kitchen.
Apart from that, sodium chloride can also be used as raw materials for the manufacture of a few important compounds such as caustic soda, bleaching powder, baking soda, and more.

Caustic soda i.e. sodium hydroxide can be manufactured by the electrolysis of brine solution i.e. sodium chloride solution. This process is also known as the Chlor-alkali process.
In the Chlor-alkali process, chlorine is also produced at the anode while hydrogen at cathode.

To manufacture baking soda, i.e. sodium hydrogencarbonate, a brine solution is used along with carbon dioxide gas (CO2), water (H2O) and ammonia (NH3).
Hence, the correct flowchart is as follows:
Therefore, Nalini has incorrectly represented nitrogen gas (N2) in the flowchart drawn by her.
