Question

During hybridisation where does the energy come from to excite the electrons in the atom

Open in App
Solution

Hybridization is characterized as the concept of mixing two atomic orbitals to give a degenerated new form of orbitals with the same energy levels.
According to the Hybridization concept, the central atom (say Carbon in methane) mixes its valence shell atomic orbitals to form degenerate hybrid orbitals (4 in case of sp3, 3 in case of sp2, and 2 in case of sp hybridization). The hybrid orbitals thus formed by the mixing of atomic orbitals are more stable and have less energy than the atomic orbitals. the excess amount of energy is released in the stabilization of hybrid orbitals and is used in the excitation of one electron from low energy 2s orbital to high energy 2pz orbital. actual the mixing of orbital, the release of energy, and excitation of the electron, all happen at the same time. but to make the concept easy we show excitation before hybridization.
