During lightning strike, the accumulated charges in the cloud induce opposite charges on the Earth. Insulating air breaks down and hence huge amount of charge flows. Enormous amount of heat is generated due to this high charge flow(current). This is followed by production of sound which is heard after the lightning flash as light travels faster than sound.
