The muscular layer of the human uterus is called the myometrium, the glandular layer is the endometrium and the outer layer (serosa) is the perimetrium. During the menstrual cycle, the endometrial tissue thickens due to the formation of blood vessels and cells due to an increase in progesterone. However, if implantation does not take place within two weeks approximately, the hormonal levels drop thus causing shedding of the endometrial tissue, a process of menstruation.
