During non-cyclic photophosphorylation, the reaction centre of PS II absorbs a specific wavelength of red light and releases energy rich electrons.

These electrons are transported along an electron transport chain and they finally reach PS I. The void created in PS II due to loss of electrons is filled by the splitting of water (photolysis of water) which releases electrons, protons and oxygen.
