Solution
The correct option is C Efflux of proton to perimitochondrial space During the process of oxidative phosphorylation, the reduced coenzymes are oxidised and the electrons donated by reduced coenzymes are transported by mitochondrial electron transport system. The electron transport through various transporters is linked to pumping of protons from mitochondrial matrix to the peri-mitochondrial space. The accumulation of protons in peri-mitochondrial space establishes an electrochemical gradient of protons, which is ultimately responsible for ATP synthesis when protons flow from peri-mitochondrial space to mitochondrial matrix along the electrochemical gradient. This mechanism of ATP synthesis is called as the chemiosmotic mechanism.
