Photosynthesis is a unique process in which the green plants utilise relatively simple substances like CO2 and water and synthesize glucose in presence of sunlight. Photosynthesis includes light dependent and light independent reactions.

The light dependent reactions occur in the grana (thylakoids) and the assimilatory powers, ATP and NADPH are formed. These are utilised during light independent reactions to synthesize glucose.

Light independent reactions begin with carbon dioxide fixation or carboxylation. During carboxylation, CO2 combines with RuBP and this reaction is catalysed by RuBisCO. These reactions occur in the stroma of chloroplast. Inside the chloroplast, the space with homogenous fluid is called stroma.

The respiration in plants takes place in mitochondria while photosynthesis takes place in chloroplasts.
