The bacterial chromosome is circular and hence the replication process proceeds in both directions simultaneously. While the leading strand is synthesised in the 5’ - 3’ direction, the lagging strand is synthesised in the 3’ - 5’ direction with the help of Okazaki fragments. The beginning of the leading strand has a RNA primer to initialize the replication and the lagging strand has many RNA primers which give rise to many Okazaki fragments.
