During the anaerobic digestion of organic waste, such as in producing biogas, which one of the following is not degraded?
Anaerobic digestion is a collection of processes by which microorganisms break down biodegradable material in the absence of oxygen. The process is used for industrial or domestic purposes to manage wastes to produce biogas or fuels. Microbes can degrade cellulose, hemicellulose and lipids easily beacause of their chemical structures which can be degarded by a class enzymes produced by these microbes but, complex polymers like lignin cannot be broken anaerobically. Enzymes involved in breakdown of lignin are secreted by a class of fungi and bacteria which are mostly aerobic in nature. Hence, lignin cannot be degraded during the process of bio gas production.
