Question

During the extraction of metals, electrolytic refining is used to obtain pure metals.

(i) Which material will be used as anode and cathode for refining copper metal in this process?

(ii) Suggest a suitable electrolyte also.

(iii) In this electrolytic cell, where do we get pure copper after passing electric current?

Solution

(i) In the electrolytic refining process, the impure metal is made into the anode and a thin strip of pure metal is made into the cathode. Thus, a thin strip of pure copper is made as to the cathode. And an impure copper block is made as to anode.

(ii) Copper Sulphate (CuSO) Solutions.

(iii) On passing electric current, the impure metal dissolves from the anode and goes into the electrolyte solution, and pure metal from the electrolyte deposits on the cathode.
