After the ovum is released from the mature Graafian follicle, there will be formation of a protein called lutein making the follicle appear yellow in colour. Also, the follicle shrinks and become smaller in size. It starts producing the hormone progesterone. This yellow and shrunken structure derived from the follicle is called corpus luteum.
