Nematode resistant plants are commonly achieved through the silencing of RNA. Here specific DNA is introduced into the host plant that it produces both sense and antisense RNA that bind to each other. These dsRNA are then cleaved by Dicer enzymes into small interfering RNAs (siRNAs).
Each siRNA complexes with ribonucleases that are distinct from Dicer to form an RNA-induced silencing complex(RISC). The activates RISC uses the siRNA or miRNA as a template for recognising complementary mRNA. When it finds a complementary strand, it activates RNase and cleaves the mRNA.
