(1) Multiplication phase: The germinal epithelium cells of the ovary multiply by mitotic divisions to form a small cluster of cells known as follicles. A single cell from the follicle differentiates and form oogonium.
(2) Growth phase: The oogonium grows in size and attains maturity and is called primary oocyte.
(3) Maturation phase: The primary oocyte undergoes the first meiotic division and produces a larger secondary oocyte and a small polar body. The secondary oocyte divides to form a mature ovum and a second polar body.
