Question

During the respiration of an organism A, 1 molecule of glucose produces 2 ATP molecules whereas, in the respiration of another organism B, 1 molecule of glucose produces 38 ATP molecules.

(b) Which organism is undergoing anaerobic respiration?

Solution

Answer:
Organism A is undergoing anaerobic respiration because in anaerobic respiration, 1 molecule of glucose is incompletely broken down or oxidised into either lactic acid or ethanol and carbon dioxide, and along with it only 2 ATPs are generated.
1 Glucose → Lactic acid + 2 ATP
1 Glucose → 2C2H5OH(ethanol)+2CO2+2ATP
