Immediately after ventricular contraction begins, the ventricular pressure rises abruptly causing atrio-ventricular valves to close. Then an additional 0.02-0.03 seconds is required for the ventricles to build up sufficient pressure to push the semi-lunar valves open. This period of contraction without emptying is known as isometric contraction. This is followed by rapid ejection of blood.
