Assertion: Carbon has the ability to combine itself, atom by atom, to form long carbon chains.

A vast amount of carbon or organic compounds are produced by self-combination.

Reason: Catenation is the formation of chain or ring molecules by the binding of one atom of an element to its another atom through covalent bonds.

For example, lengthy hydrocarbon chains and rings (benzene) are produced by the catenation of carbon.

Thus, both Assertion and Reason are correct and Reason is the correct explanation of Assertion.
