Question

Each organism has a fixed number of chromosomes. Humans have 46 in each cell. But during reproduction, when two cells combine why don't the number of chromosomes get multiplied by 2?

Solution

During reproduction, chromosome number (2n) gets reduced to half (n) in gametes. This is because the process of meiosis takes place in the cell which leads to the reduction of number of chromosomes to half of its original number. Mitotic divisions restore the original diploid number of chromosomes again.
