Each side of a square flower bed is $$2~m~80~cm$ long. It is extended by digging a strip 30cm
wide all around it. Find the area of the enlarged flower bed and also the increase in the area of the flower bed.

Each side of flower bed $=2m80cm=2.8m$ $[\because 1m=100cm]$

Area of the Square flower bed $=(side{)}^2=2.8\times 2.8m^2$

Area of flower bed before extension $=7.84m^2$

If it is extended by digging a strip of $30cm$ wide all around it.

Then, the new side will be $=2.8+0.6=3.4m$ [$\because$ from both sides we have to add $30cm,$ that is $30cm+30cm=60cm=0.6m$]

Area of the flower bed after extension $=3.4\times 3.4$

Area of enlarged flower bed $=11.56m^2$

Increase in the area of flower bed $=11.56-7.84=3.72m^2$
