Solution

Each side of flower bed =2 m 80 cm=2.8 m [1 m=100 cm]

Area of the Square flower bed =(side)2=2.8×2.8 m2

Area of flower bed before extension =7.84 m2

If it is extended by digging a strip of 30 cm wide all around it.

Then, the new side will be =2.8+0.6=3.4 m [ from both sides we have to add 30 cm, that is 30 cm+30 cm=60 cm=0.6 m]

Area of the flower bed after extension =3.4×3.4

Area of enlarged flower bed =11.56 m2

Increase in the area of flower bed =11.567.84=3.72 m2
