Taste buds are nerve endings distributed on the tongue which help in the perception of taste. Taste receptor cells are clustered in taste bud which helps in detecting taste like salty, sweet, bitter, sour and umami. Small openings called taste pores are present on the tongue epithelium. Food dissolved in saliva come into contact with the taste receptors through taste pores. The nerves which carry the sensation of taste to the gustatory lobe of the cerebrum are seventh, ninth and tenth cranial nerve.
