In a pond ecosystem, phytoplanktons are the producers. The primary consumers are the zooplanktons and fishes are the following consumers. The biomass of the phytoplanktons is less than that of zooplanktons. Hence there is an increase in the number of organisms with increasing trophic level from primary producer to tertiary consumer resulting in an inverted pyramid of biomass.
