Education is a challenging proposition for Indian economy. Discuss.
Indian Constitution has provided for free and compulsory education for all children aged between 6-14 years. The challenges include:
(a) Gender Inequality: There is a wide gap between enrollment ratio of females and males in India. Females' drop out ratio is also very high.
(b) Urban-Rural Bias: There is a large gap between access to education in rural and urban areas. Even till the present day, only 75% of rural kids are attending school.
(d) Higher education - a few takers: Very few people are going for higher education in India. The rate is considerably low in rural areas.
(c) Less government expenditure on education: Education Commission had recommended spending 6% of GDP on education. Even at present, a little over 4% is being spent on education.
