Question

Electric field given by the vector E=x^i+y^j is present in the XY plane. A small ring carrying charge +Q, which can freely slide on a smooth nonconducting rod, is projected along the rod from the point (0,L) such that it can reach the other end of the rod. The minimum velocity that should be given to the ring is (QL2/xm)1/2. Find x. (Assume zero gravity)

Solution

E=dV/dt
dV=L/20xdx+LL/2ydy
(V1V2)=L2/8+L2/8L2/2=L2/4ΔV=L2/2
Work done, W=ΔVQ=L2Q/4=mv2/2v=QL2/2m
Thus x=2
