Electrolysis is carried out in three cells:
(A)−1.0MCuSO4, Pt electrodes;
(B)−1.0MCuSO4 , Copper electrodes;
(C)−1.0MKCI,Pt electrodes. If volume of
electrolytic solution is maintained constant in
each of the cells, which is correct set of pH
changes in (A),(B) and (C) cells respectively :
SRP of Cu2+>SRP of H+
∴ In case 1)
copper gets reduced
and OH− gets oxidised
∴[OH−] decreases and [H+] increases,
∴ pH decreases (pH=−log[H+])
In case 2)
copper gets reduced and oxidised
∴ No change in conc of ions
Hence no change in pH
In case 3)
SRP of K−1< SRP of H+
∴H+ gets reduced,
Hence [H+] decreases,
∴pH=−log[H+] increases
