Although it seems that electrolytic refining involves lower temperatures, this is not true. For instance, Crude Aluminum is refined using electrolysis which involves high temperatures to melt the electrolyte (Cryolite + CaF2 saturated with Al2O3). Also, the extraction of Aluminum from Al2O3 is in itself a high temperature process (happens between 9501050C)

In both these cases, the medium is non-aqueous.
