A = 3.79 electron volts
B = 3.56 electron volts
Which of them will ionize more easily and why?

Solution

The larger the electron affinity of an element, the larger will be the energy released on formation of its ion. Hence, the element will form ion more easily from its isolated gaseous atom. Now, element A has larger value of electron affinity; so, it will ionize more easily.
