Question

electron gain enthalpies of halogen are largely negative. why

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,

Electron gain enthalpy of halogens are largely negative. This means that high amount of energy is released when an electron is added to an isolated gaseous atom of halogen. This is because, halogens are short of one electron to attain noble gas fulfilled configuration. When one electron is added to the halogen atom, it attains full filled stability. Hence, high amount of energy is released and thus electron gain enthalpy of halogens are largely negative.
