Question

Electronic configuration in Copper is [Ar] 4s1, 3d10 and not [Ar] 4s2, 3d9

Open in App
Solution

Copper has atomic number 29.The expected electronic configuration is [Ar] 4s23d9. But it has a configurationof [Ar] 4s13d10. This is due to the fact that half filled and fully filled orbitals are more stable than partially filled orbital. In [Ar] 4s23d9, from s orbital if you transfer 1 electron to3d orbital both the orbitals will get stability more as they become 4s13d10. That iswhythe copper configuration is [Ar] 4s13d10
