Question

Electronic transitions in Li2+ ions take place from n2 to n1 shell such that:2n2+3n1=18 and 2n23n1=6. The total number of photons emitted when electrons transit to n1 shell is x (electrons do not fall lower than n1 shell) and number of photons emitted in the Balmer range is y. Find value of x+y.

Solution

Given,
2n2+3n1=18
2n23n1=6
Solving these two equations, we get n1=2, n2=6.
So total number of photons when electrons transit to n1 shell will be (x)=(n2n1+1)(n2n1)2 = (62+1)(62)2 = 10
Photons in Balmer range (visible range) will be 62,52,42,32
So, number of photons in Balmer range will be (y)=4
x+y=14
