Question

Electrons, nuclei, atoms and molecules like all forms of matter, will fall under the influence of gravity. Consider separately the beam of electrons, of nuclei, of atoms and of molecules travelling a horizontal distance of 1 m. Let the average speed of electrons be 3×107ms1, for a thermal neutron 2.2×105ms1, for a neon atom 5.8×102ms1 and for an oxygen molecule 4.6×102ms1. The beams move through vaccuum horizontally with initial velocities mentioned above. A golf ball is also projected horizontally with 20 ms1 in vacuum.
Out of the given beams which deviates maximum in travelling 2m?

Solution

The correct option is A oxygen beam
The vertical displacement will be 12gt2
The horizontal distance travelled is same for all particles. toxygen is maximum since it has the least velocity.
Hence, the oxygen beam will have the maximum deviation from the horizontal trajectory.
