The atom is made up of electrons that revolve around a nucleus.
Electrons are tiny, negatively charged particles that go around the nucleus in a curved path or orbit.
They can't move about freely in every direction. Because of their energy levels, their rotation is confined to specific orbits.
Energy levels are the fixed distances between electrons as well as the dense nucleus of an atom.
Energy levels are also known as electron shells. An electron can transition from one level of energy to the next.
Explanation of energy levels:
The energy shells or levels of an atom are depicted in the figure below.
Here are the first three energy levels. Level 'K' is another name for the first energy level. Level L is the second energy level, level M is the third, and so on.
The electron from energy level K has the least energy, whereas those from levels further out from the nucleus have more.
Valence electrons are electrons in the most extreme energy level.
These valence electrons are responsible for a variety of atom characteristics. These are written as 1, 2, and 3 or K, L, M, N, and so on.
