Chemical properties of elements are determined by the number of electrons in the valence shell of the atom of the element. Electrons are filled in different shells called K. L. M etc and they are filled in a specific order and once a shell is filled the electrons are added to the next shell. For each shell, there will be an element that has the same number of valence electron as the previous shell. All these will possess similar properties. Elements in the successive shells would have similarities with elements in the previous shells thereby displaying similarity in properties after regular intervals.
