Question

Elements In The Same Group Have Equal Valency Comment On It

Open in App
Solution

Valency is defined as the number of electrons lose or gained by an atom to attain a noble gas configuration.

  • Elements in the same group show the same valency because they have the same number of electrons in the outermost shell i.e. Valence shell.
  • Since valency depends upon the valence electrons so they have the same valency.

Examples:

  • Valency of the first group element (alkali metal) is one.
  • The valency of a second group ( alkaline earth metal) element is two.
