Metallic hydrides are formed when hydrogen molecule reacts with the d- and f- block elements. These are usually formed by transition metals but Group 7, 8, 9 of periodic table does not form any hydride. Hence, this region of the periodic table from group 7 to group 9 is known as the hydride gap.
Group 1 form ionic hydrides due to their electropositive nature.
