Question

Elements X, Y and Z belongs to IA group of the periodic table their atomic radii are as follows:

X⇢1.33 A, Y⇢0.95 A, Z⇢0.60 A

Arrange the elements in the increasing order of atomic numbers by giving reasons.

Solution

  • The greater the ionic radii greater will be the atomic number
  • As ionic radii increase the number of electrons increases. Thus atomic number increases.
  • As the atomic number increases the valence electron becomes farther removed from, and less strongly attracted to the nuclear core, as a result the reactivity of the metal increases.
  • When we move from top to bottom in a group the atomic size increases and the atomic number also increases.

Therefore the increasing order of atomic numbers will be

Z < Y < X. i.e

Z⇢0.60 A < Y⇢0.95 A < X⇢1.33 A
