Question

Eliminate θ from the equation x=a(secθ+tanθ);y=b(secθtanθ)

Open in App
Solution

Give that:
x=a(sec θ+tan θ) ......(1)
y=b(sec θtan θ) ......(2)

Multiplying equation (1) and (2), we get
xy=ab(sec θtan θ)(sec θ+tan θ)
xy=ab(sec2 θtan2 θ)

As we know that sec2 θtan2 θ=1
xy=ab

Or
xa=by

Hence, this is the required solution.
