Solution

The former German units of measurement vary from each kingdom and region to region and are therefore quite misleading. In Germany, Elle was the unit of measurement that was used to measure cloth.

  • In the English system, one ell equals 1.143 meters, 1.25 yards, and 45 inches.
  • This cloth ell was used with a similar length in France. In France, it was called the aune.
  • The German Elle and Dutch el are a little more than half the English ell.
  • The word comes from the Latin ulna.
  • It meant the elbow and is now the name of the bone on the outside of the forearm.
