During the 1780s, the French government was facing severe financial crisis. The expenditure of the government was too high relative to the tax revenue. As a result, the king was compelled to think of imposing new taxes. For that, he called the Estates General. The representatives of the Third Estate were most numerous in the Estates General. They demanded that the king remove the special privileges that had been given to the First and Second Estates till now. The king refused due to which the Third Estate members removed themselves from the Estates General and declared themselves to be the National Assembly.
