Dear student, An ion is an atom or a group of atoms (i.e molecule) in which the total number of electrons is not equal to the total number of protons, giving it a net positive or negative electric charge. Ions are obtained form an atom or chemically bonded group of atoms by adding or removing electrons. Charge on an ion is equal to total number of protons minus total number of electrons. Positively charged ions are called cations and are obtained by loss of electrons. Negatively charged ions are called anions and obtained by gain of electrons. Polyatomic ions are also known as molecular ions .These are charged species. Poly means many which implies that it is a combination of two or more than two atoms which are covalently bonded to give a polyatomic ion which can be positively charged species or can be negatively charged species. They are considered as the conjugate acid or conjugate base of the neutral species.
