Solution

1. The most common form of phosphorous is white phosphorous, which due to its high reactivity with atmospheric oxygen and undergoing a vigorous reaction is stored under water.

2. Temperature of water for its storage is kept low, since melting point of white phosphorous is 44.1 degree Celsius and above it ,it would melt.

3. On melting, the liquid phosphorous will come on water surface as it is lighter than water in liquid state and then it would react vigorously with oxygen.

4. The reaction is :
2P + 5O2 2 P2O5
