Most of the earth's water is unusable as it is salt water. Fresh water only accounts for 2% of the total water available on earth. Even of that 2%, most of it is trapped in glaciers and polar ice caps. Hence, the amount of water that people can actually use is very little relative to the total water availability. Due to rising population, this amount of usable water is becoming increasingly scarce. Hence, 40 percent of the worlds population lives in water stressed areas​.
