Question

What is the electronic configuration of Scandium? Is the electronic configuration of elements after atomic number 20 different ,do they follow spdfconfigurations,or do they also accord 2n2 formula?

Solution

The electronic configuration of elements after 20 is not different. We can also write the configuration of those elements in terms of K, L, M shells. Scandium has atomic number 21. The electronic configuration is 2, 8, 8, 3. Here the M shell can not accommodate more than 8 electrons as if it will accommodate 11 electrons then it will violate the one rule for the electronic configuration i.e., the valence shell can not have more than 8 electrons.
In terms of s,p,d,f the configuration will be 1s22s22p63s23p63d14s2.
