Solution

The correct option is C

two distinct photochemical reactions

Emerson effect or red drop is the sharp drop in the rate of photosynthesis when a monochromatic light of wavelength more than 680 nm is used.

Reasons for Emerson effect:

Photosynthesis is increased by light absorption by accessory pigments. These pigments transfer the absorbed energy to chlorophyll a.

At least two photochemical systems photosystem I and photosystem II are involved in the process of photosynthesis. PS I contains chlorophyll a whose absorption peak is 700 nm and in PS II the absorption peak is 680nm.

Thus, it is concluded that the Emerson effect is due to the presence of two different photosystems that carry out different photochemical reactions.
