Emerson’s enhancement effect and Red drop have been instrumental in the discovery of
Two photosystems operating simultaneously
Emerson’s enhancement effect
Emerson noticed a sharp decrease in the photosynthetic rate when wavelength more than 680 nm (red light) was used. This sharp drop was regarded as ‘red drop’.
Further, he used the 680 nm illumination along with 700 nm (far red light) for the plant and noticed that it increases the efficiency of the photosynthesis. The photosynthetic rate increases beyond that of the two wavelengths added up. This phenomenon is known as Emerson’s enhancement effect
Emerson’s enhancement effect
We have two photosystems that carry out the light reaction of photosynthesis- PS I (P700) and PS II (P680). PS I and PS II absorb light of wavelengths, 700 nm and 680 nm respectively. Hence, when these two photosystems function simultaneously the photosynthetic rate enhances.
Final Answer:
(b) Two photosystems operating simultaneously
