Question

Emile did an experiment to compare the rate of respiration in woodlice (small crustaceans) and maggots (the larvae of houseflies). The diagram shows how he set up his experiment. Limewater is a clear liquid. It goes cloudy when carbon dioxide is present.
What is the reason for this?

Solution

When carbon dioxide release by respiration reacts with lime water which forms calcium carbonate that makes the water cloudy as CaCO3 is insoluble in water.
