Solution

The correct option is B 8
Glycolysis is the process of partial oxidation of glucose or similar hexose sugar into 2 molecules of pyruvic acid through a series of enzyme mediated reactions. It was discovered by 3 German scientists- Gustav Embden, Otto Meyerhof and J. Parnas. So, it is also called the Embden-Meyerhof-Parnas pathway or the EMP pathway.

In glycolysis, 2 molecules of ATP are consumed during double phosphorylation of glucose to form fructose-1,6-bisphosphate. In return, 4 molecules of ATP are produced by Substrate level phosphorylation (conversion of 1,3- bisphosphoglycerate to 3-phosphoglycerate and PEP to pyruvate). 2 molecules of NADH (reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) are also formed at the time of oxidation of glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate to 1,3-bisphosphoglycerate. Each NADH (reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) is equivalent to 3 ATP. So the net gain in glycolysis is 8 ATP.
