Oxidation of compounds

In respiration, oxidation of compounds such as glucose results in the formation of carbon dioxide.

During this process, energy is stored in the phosphate bond of the $ATP$.

Release of energy

The energy stored in the form of $ATP$ is released whenever required by the cell. The breakdown of $ATP$ into $ADP$ and $Pi$, results from the breaking of phosphoanhydride bond which releases energy which can be utilized for various activities in the cell.
