Solution

The correct option is B λ3=λ1λ2λ1+λ2
When an electron falls from energy level E2 to energy level E1, the frequency v of the emitted radiation is given by
hv=E2E1
hcλ=E2E1
1λ=1hc(E2E1)=k(E2E1) where k=1hc
For energy levels A, B and C, we have
1λ1=k(ECEB).....(i)
1λ2=k(EBEA).....(ii)
and 1λ3=k(ECEA).....(iii)
Adding (i), (ii) and (iii),
1λ1+1λ2+1λ3=k{(ECEB)+(EBEA)+(ECEA)}=2k(ECEA)=2λ31λ1+1λ2=1λ3λ3=λ1λ2λ1+λ2
Hence, the correct choice is (b).
