Various Acts for the Legal Protection of Consumers are:

(i) The Consumers Protection Act, 1986: It seeks to protect and promote the interest of consumers by safeguarding them against defective goods, deficient services, unfair trade practices and other forms of exploitation. Therefore, it also provides a three-tier machinery for redressal of consumer's grievances.

(ii) The Contract Act, 1982: It lays down the conditions in which the promises made by parties to a contract are binding on each other.

(iii) The Sale of Goods Act, 1930: It safeguards and relieves the buyers when goods purchased do not comply with expressed or implied conditions/warranties.

(iv) The Essential Commodities Act, 1955: It aims to control the production, supply, and distribution of essential commodities, ensuring price control, equal distribution and providing action against anti-social activities.

(v) The Agricultural Produce Act, 1937: It prescribes grade standards for agricultural goods and livestock products. It lays down the procedure of grading, marking and packing of agricultural goods.

(vi) The Prevention of Food Adulteration Act, 1954: It aims to check adulteration of food articles and ensure their purity.

(vii) The Standards of Weights and Measures Act, 1976: It provides protection to consumers against the malpractice of underweight or under measure.

(viii) The Trade Mark Act, 1999: It prevents the use of fraudulent marks on products and provides protection to consumers against such goods.

(ix) The Competition Act, 2002: It provides protection to consumers in case of practices adopted by business firms that hamper competition in the market.

(x) The Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986: It has two major activities formulation of quality standards and their certification through the BIS certification scheme. After ensuring that the goods conform to the prescribed standards, producers are permitted to use ISI mark on the product.
